MCCPTA HEALTH COMMITTEE FORUM

The Montgomery County Council of PTAs (MCCPTA) is sponsoring an informational forum on Artificial Turf and Natural Turf athletic fields on Wednesday, October 7 from 7:00-9:00 PM in the Carver Auditorium at 850 Hungerford Dr. in Rockville.  MCCPTA will be sponsoring this information forum for PTA members and interested school community members. The overall goal is to share information from both sides of the issue related to artificial turf versus natural turf.

Confirmed speakers include a representative from FieldTurf Tarkett, Jay Nalls (Superintendent, Norbeck Country Club), Kevin Morris (Executive Director, National Turfgrass Evaluation Program in Beltsville, MD), Mike Riley (Deputy Director of Montgomery County Department of Parks), and Joseph Lavorgna (Director, MCPS Department of Facilities Management.)  All PTA members and community members (including students and athletes) are welcome.

Take 15 for the Health of It?

  • Take 15 for the Health of It! is a statewide initiative designed to help Maryland families develop strategies for healthy living. The program provides practical tools families can use to help their children develop good eating habits, enjoy physical activity, and talk about sensitive issues such as substance abuse and body image.

    Parents, educators, and kids will find resources and fun activities for children from birth through age 18. Materials will be distributed through schools and public libraries and also will be available on the Take 15 website through a multitude of related links. Take 15 and enjoy!

Physical Activity Resources

  • Girls on the Run: Girls on the Run is a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. The curricula address all aspects of girls' development - their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being.  GOTR is operating in several MCPS middle schools.  For more details about the program, visit www.girlsontherun.org.  For info about the MCPS GOTR program email Eve Mills.

Snacks:

  • Healthy Snack Ideas – resources available:  The Center for Science in the Public Interest, with input from experts and parents, has developed resources with healthy snack ideas for parents, teachers, afterschool programs, and other caregivers. There is a 1-page version that can be used as a handout or model newsletter article (that is the attachment) at http://www.cspinet.org/nutritionpolicy/snacks_summary.pdf.  This one-pager makes a great PTA insert!

School Nutrition Association

  • The School Nutrition Association's website has a great parent link. School nutrition programs help build healthy eating habits for life and the members of the School Nutrition Association welcome the involvement of parents in the effort to provide nutritious school meals in America's schools.
    Parents currently have an excellent opportunity to help create healthy school environments by participating in the development, implementation and evaluation of local school wellness policies. Parent input is needed and valued.
