MCCPTA Health/Safety Committee Meetings for 2009-2010
If you are passionately interested in improving any of the following safety concerns, please put your energy into action as we meet to evaluate safety concerns and work with MCPS and other community leaders to advocate for our children:
- not enough supervision on the playground
- safety and security on school grounds
- traffic issues affecting student safety
- gang or bullying problems
- drug and alcohol use
- poor condition of school buildings and portables / air quality in your school and portables
- emergency preparedness concerns.
We will have the following MCCPTA Safety Committee meetings at Carver Educational Building at 850 Hungerford Drive, Rockville. Meetings will be held in room 223 (second floor-Enter at East side
entrance and immediately go up the stairs.):
- Wednesday, September 23 at 7:00 pm (Guest Speaker: MCPS Director of
Facilities Management, Joe Lavorgna)
- Wednesday, October 28 at 7:00 pm
- Monday, December 7 at 7:00 pm
- Wednesday, February 10 at 7:00 pm
- Monday, March 22 at 7:00 pm
- Monday, May 10 at 7:00 pm

Current Policies for Public Comment
On October 26, 2009, the Board of Education tentatively adopted Policy JHF, Bullying, Harassment, or Intimidation to comply with Maryland law and to demonstrate commitment to addressing this issue. The policy includes professional development for administrators and staff; encouraging student involvement in prevention efforts; facilitating communication with families and the community and implementing strategies for supporting their children; ensuring collaboration with community health and mental health resources; and providing a range of interventions developed to prevent bullying, harassment, or intimidation while ensuring the safety of students who are victims.

Two guides for parents may be helpful during times of crisis:

Take 15 for the Health of It?
- Take 15 for the Health of It! is a statewide initiative designed to help Maryland families develop strategies for healthy living. The program provides practical tools families can use to help their children develop good eating habits, enjoy physical activity, and talk about sensitive issues such as substance abuse and body image.
Parents, educators, and kids will find resources and fun activities for children from birth through age 18. Materials will be distributed through schools and public libraries and also will be available on the Take 15 website through a multitude of related links. Take 15 and enjoy!

Physical Activity Resources
- Girls on the Run: Girls on the Run is a non-profit prevention program that encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through running. The curricula address all aspects of girls' development - their physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual well-being. GOTR is operating in several MCPS middle schools. Snacks:
- Healthy Snack Ideas – resources available: The Center for Science in the Public Interest, with input from experts and parents, has developed resources with healthy snack ideas for parents, teachers, afterschool programs, and other caregivers. There is a 1-page version that can be used as a handout or model newsletter article (that is the attachment) at http://www.cspinet.org/nutritionpolicy/snacks_summary.pdf. This one-pager makes a great PTA insert!
